crash different :P
So over the weekend I became the proud new owner of a blueberry G3 iMac. 350 mHz processor, 128 mb RAM, 6 GB HD, OS9.2.
We are talking serious vintage 1999 computing here. And it is awesome. I always wanted one of these things when they first came out, (I believe I was about 12 or 13 years old at the time) and it’s pretty surprising to see that with a little bit of upgrading, this machine is still pretty usable despite being at what should probably be the end of its life span. Apple really knows what they’re doing. Of course, a few years ago I would never have admitted to thinking as such, but you really can’t argue with that once you’ve used one fairly regularly. They’re just really well-made all around. Unnamed Blue iMac is currently running unbelieveably stably for a computer as old as it is – no PC I have used can boast the same. I’m impressed.
This is not to say that I’m abandoning all hope and tossing poor Papaya and Raider out into the cold, of course not. I like both platforms. But at the same time, with those two beasts around I don’t see the necessity of putting money into a new Intel Mac, as shiny as they are. So I intend to go the upgrade route with this little blue beast.
Just managed to get it network-ified this evening, and after I got a slightly older version of Mozilla installed on it, it tackles the internet with ease.
More updates to come as I move along with this project. I have yet to find decent pictures online of how to disassemble one of these, so I’ll take some when I do so myself. I sense a few Mac adventures to come…
